최인길 마티아 (1765–1795)

한양의 역관 집안에서 1765년에 태어난 최인길 마티아는 1784년 한국 천주교회가 창설된 직후 이벽 요한 세례자에게 교리를 배워 입교하였다. 1801년에 순교한 최인철 이냐시오는 그의 동생이며, 그는 이승훈 베드로가 선발한 최초의 회장 가운데 한 사람이었다. 입교 초기부터 복음 전파에 힘썼고 성직자 영입 운동에도 참여하였다.

1795년 초, 최인길은 한양 계동의 자신의 집에서 조선에 입국한 주문모 야고보 신부를 맞이하였다. 그러나 밀고로 신부의 입국 사실이 알려지자, 주문모 신부가 피신할 시간을 벌기 위해 자신이 신부로 위장하여 집에서 포졸들을 기다렸다. 역관 집안 출신으로 중국어를 할 수 있었기에 가능한 일이었다. 그 사이 주문모 신부는 강완숙 골롬바의 집으로 무사히 피신하였다.

곧 정체가 드러난 최인길은 윤유일 바오로, 지황 사바와 함께 혹독한 형벌을 받았지만 끝까지 주문모 신부의 행방을 밝히지 않고 신앙을 지켰다. 세 사람은 1795년 6월 28일(음력 5월 12일) 매질 끝에 순교하였으며, 당시 최인길의 나이는 30세였다.

후일 구베아 주교는 이들의 용기를 전해 듣고, 그들이 그리스도를 모독하라는 요구를 거부하며 “참된 구세주이신 예수 그리스도를 모독하기보다는 차라리 천 번 죽을 각오가 되어 있다”고 말했다고 기록하였다.

Choe In-gil (Matthias), 1765–1795

Born into a family of interpreters in Hanyang, Choe In-gil became one of the early leaders of the Catholic Church in Joseon.

In 1795, he sheltered Fr. Zhou Wenmo, the first Catholic priest to enter Joseon. When the authorities discovered the priest’s presence, Choe disguised himself as Fr. Zhou to give him time to escape. His knowledge of Chinese helped make the deception possible.

Choe was arrested and severely tortured but refused to reveal the priest’s whereabouts or renounce his faith. He was martyred on June 28, 1795, at the age of thirty.

Choe In-gil (Matthias), 1765–1795

Nacido en Hanyang en una familia de intérpretes, Choe In-gil fue uno de los primeros dirigentes de la Iglesia católica en Joseon.

En 1795 acogió al P. Zhou Wenmo, el primer sacerdote católico que entró en Joseon. Cuando las autoridades descubrieron su presencia, Choe se hizo pasar por el sacerdote para darle tiempo de escapar.

Fue arrestado y cruelmente torturado, pero se negó a revelar dónde se encontraba el sacerdote y permaneció fiel hasta el final. Murió mártir el 28 de junio de 1795, a los treinta años.

崔仁吉（玛弟亚，1765–1795）

崔仁吉出生于汉阳的译官家庭，是朝鲜天主教会早期的重要领袖之一。

1795年，他在家中接待了进入朝鲜的周文谟神父。 当官府得知神父入境的消息后，崔仁吉为争取逃亡时间，假扮周文谟神父留在家中等待官差，使神父得以安全转移。

崔仁吉被捕后虽遭受严酷刑罚，却始终没有供出神父的下落，也没有背弃信仰。 1795年6月28日，他在受刑后殉道，年仅30岁。
